Mary Tolstova

Born 1987, Russian

Mary Tolstova is an illustrator from Moscow. Her work concerns the absurd and ironic, using ornaments, repetitions and patterns, using a variety of different media, such as prints for textiles, fabrics, book covers and even polygraphy. For Tolstova, the world is an endless ornament and anything can be effectively depicted by a pattern; her work strives to show this in a relatable form for her viewers. She is particularly interested in the Internet and social networks as new, evolving forms of communication. While studying at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Moscow, Tolstova discovered a passion for drawing and focused on illustration and computer graphics, working on many personal projects as well as illustrating the morning headlines of different news feeds. Though focused on illustration, she has experience in many formats, such as sculpture and guerrilla art. Drawing from all these experiences, Tolstova creates unique, exciting images. She lives and works out of Moscow.
