Richard Ansett

Born 1966, British

Richard Ansett is an award-winning photographer known for his striking portraits. He has embarked on a relentless ongoing inquiry into a sense of place, examined through the exploration of his relationship to the world, and the frames of reference through which we all view society. Ansett excels at capturing true emotion from his subjects, who often come from marginalized populations. Since 2004 his active involvement in the community supporting people at their most vulnerable and an ongoing education in humanistic philosophy has led to a parallel and vital exploration of the complexity of this emotional world; he considers this as an essential component in his development as a person and artist. Ansett’s images are in permanent and private collections including the National Portrait Galleries of London and Canada, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France and the Smithsonian. He won The Arte Laguna Prize13 and Grand Prix de la Decouverte in 2013. He received a gold award at Prix de la Photographie 2011 and was awarded 1st prize at the Moscow International Foto Awards 2014. His images have appeared an unprecedented 10 times in the National Portrait Gallery Portrait Prize Exhibitions and he has shown at the Royal Academy, London.
