About the artist
Bob Carey received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Arizona State University in 1985. First in Phoenix and, since 2003, based in New York, he has operated a successful commercial photography studio. Bob Carey Photography's commercial clients, both impressive and varied, appreciate Bob's fine art approach, which fuels his distinctive and often conceptual imagery.
These commercial clients include Gilead, Essence Magazine, Lexus, MasterCard, Men's Health, ForbesLife, "O" Oprah Magazine, Segway, Inc., University of Phoenix and HarperCollins Publishers.
Bob's fine art photography has garnered international attention and he has participated in solo and group exhibitions in Arizona, California, Louisiana, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, Tennessee, Prague, Czechoslovakia, Paris and Strasbourg, France.
In 2002, as part of a new project exploring stereotypes and transformation, Bob began photographing himself in a pink tutu. When his wife, Linda, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, the project took on a different meaning. It became a powerful tool for self-therapy; expressing, vulnerability, isolation, and humor. Carey’s wife shared them with other patients, bringing laughter and levity into their chemotherapy treatments. This shared laughter became the inspiration for Bob to self-publish a book of the images, Ballerina and begin raising funds for those living with breast cancer. It is now known as The Tutu Project, which went viral in 2012, and the images are known worldwide.
