About the artist
Imke Jansen creates minimal, monochrome, calm, appeasing and unobstrusive photographs. Her still-lifes are still. The luxury or banal objects shown are diminished by the room they are set in and their surrounding three-dimensionality. Focus is drawn thereby onto textures, structures and surfaces of the objects alone. They are reduced to graphic shapes and outlines, accompanied by their shadow only and that only sometimes, enclosed just by the negative spaces that are created by their positioning and perspective. Jansens's images do not want to be opulent or loud, they do not want to tell a story or be funny, but rather encourage the viewer to pause and focus. Imke Jansen was born 1979 in Germany, but lived and learned in New York City for several years before returning to Germany and setting up in Hamburg as a freelance photographer.
