Stefan Ruhmke grew up in the gray of East Berlin, and was ten years old when the wall fell. Molded by this experience, he began studies at Letter Verein in Berlin, after working in front of the camera as a model. Since he first grabbed a camera, the themes in Ruhmke’s work have not changed; rather, his world has become saturated in color, with the gray of the former east disappeared. He specializes in portraits and intricately staged photography, acting out poetic scenarios topped with dry humor. Ruhmke has a keen ability to capture fleeting, normally hidden moments from those he shoots, with hints of secrets and stories. He currently lives and works out of Berlin and Northern Sweden.
