ENDANGERED, ON ICE BY ERIK HIJWEEGE

Inspired by the recovery of a frozen mammoth in almost perfect condition in 2013, Erik Hijweege explores the slow, yet constant deterioration of nature, creating a series centered on endangered animal species. Known for his ambrotypes, the result of the wet plate collodion process that he employs throughout much of his work, Hijweege’s images of preserved animals are haunting and thoughtful. He captured many of the animals at the worlds largest inventory of biological species, the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. With a fragile, unpredictable nature, the ambrotypes were the perfect way to highlight the concerning state of these animals.
