Daan Brand has released a new photo book, “Johnson and the Corner Kid,” about a fictional character named Johnson. Johnson is someone many people can recognize and relate to; he is the oddball, the loner, and the queer duck standing on the side of the dance floor at high school parties. With a head made out of paper-mache, Daan captures Johnson in both ordinary and absurd moments. Daan uses Johnson to provoke empathy in the viewer for a character in a photographic series, commonly done in films and books. As both a director and photographer, he uses qualities and skills from both disciplines to inform the other.
