About the artist

Daan is a photographer and director. His work is heavily influenced by his former career as a cartoonist - he provides creative solutions with twists in both his photography and film work, as well as in his life. Humor and dynamics are his weapons of choice in this battle. Daan believes that photography is about capturing the moment - that there is no before and no after. Whether in highly staged settings or shooting on the fly, he searches keenly for that little moment, a twitch in the eye, a little puff of smoke, or an odd grin that will tie the image together and give it an extra glow. He has had numerous exhibitions and won multiple awards, but is never content to rest on his laurels. Instead, Daan constantly seeks innovation and is not scared to reinvent himself.

About the book

"Johnson and the Corner Kid" is about a fictional character named Johnson. Johnson is someone many people can recognize and relate to; he is the oddball, the loner, and the queer duck standing on the side of the dance floor at high school parties. With a head made out of paper-mache, Daan captures Johnson in both ordinary and absurd moments. Daan uses Johnson to provoke empathy in the viewer for a character in a photographic series, commonly done in films and books. As both a director and photographer, he uses qualities and skills from both disciplines to inform the other.
